Using the records of the Chicago, Burlington and Quincy lines, the Chicago and Northwestern line, and the private papers of James F. Foy, author Grodinsky illuminates the development of the Iowa Pool in the 1870's and its unprecedented banding together of three companies that controlled the Chicago-Omaha road: the Northwestern, the Burlington, and the Rock Island.
